Update on CSO Tourism Releases

Update on Releases PCI: Q1 2018 Tourism & Travel published on 13th June Overseas Travel May 2018- to be published 27th June Publishing monthly data from January 2018 onwards Seasonally adjusted monthly data also published HTS Q1 2018 – to be published 4th July Same-day visits- data collection started January 2018.

Overseas Travel – publishing monthly data Published in January 2018 release (monthly series from January 2016) Previously – three month rolling series Monthly data published for: All trips Irish residents’ trips overseas Trips to Ireland (total) – and broken down to Great Britain, Other Europe, USA/Canada and Other Areas. Both unadjusted and seasonally adjusted monthly series

Overseas Travel – More detailed monthly data Trips to Ireland from Great Britain France Germany Italy Spain Other Europe USA and Canada Australia, New Zealand and Other Oceania Other areas Unadjusted data only (i.e. not compiling a seasonally series)

HTS – Same-day visits Started collecting SDV data in January 2018 Extra questions on HTS form - Took guidance from Eurostat on what questions to ask Main destination of SDV- ask county / country visited Reason for SDV – personal / professional Hours at destination (Eurostat suggest 3+ hours at destination for it to be a SDV) How much was spent on SDV Who went on trip Collecting and processing of data going well Some missing data – for all SDV questions – estimation & imputation First results – probably towards end of 2018

Tourism Transformation Project

Update on Tourism Transformation Recap on objectives of the project: To replace paper collection system with mobile app To meet new data requirements – frequency/detail To provide flexible response to changing data needs

Update on Tourism Transformation (2) Current status: Mobile app for interviewers developed Took considerably longer than expected New questionnaire developed Ready for field testing Preparing for roll-out of new collection system Review before we take the next steps

Review of Tourism Transformation Project Time elapsed since original planning means we need to: Review changes in context, drivers and opportunities Reset how the project will go forward Heavy project emphasis on mobile app and questionnaire Deployment of the app / questionnaire is multi-facetted: Statistical; Workforce; Field testing; Live environment

Elements of the review Purpose and objectives of Tourism Transformation Project Statistical output needs – have they changed? Opportunities – have they changed? e.g. auxiliary data sources, big data etc. Evaluate the options and alternatives Make recommendations on way forward CSO Management Board – by September

Planned outputs from the review Confirmation of the planned statistical outputs (user needs) Plan comprising short-term, medium-term and long-term actions: Sample design – flights & passengers Cluster sample Grossing plan for aggregate results Auxiliary data sources for calibration (some may be medium term)

Planned outputs from the review (2) Plan for field testing in airports: Establish how questionnaire works in live situation Identify cognitive, language and practical issues Get greater certainty about capacity needs Plan for moving to live survey collection: Timetable of new collection and parallel run with old system Parallel workforce plan Analysis of the newly-collected data Iterative adjustment of the sample design Precision estimation under new collection system

Planned outputs from the review (3) Plan for introduction of outputs from new system: Timetable for new outputs Managing the change from old to new system (likely break in series) Alternative data sources (medium to long-term): Identification of potential new data sources How can they contribute to Tourism Statistics? Replace or complement existing series? Calibration? Medium to long-term timetable

Planned outputs from the review (4) Household Travel Survey: Examine potential to meet some data needs (e.g. expenditure abroad by Irish residents) via the HTS Sample design; Questionnaire; collection mode Online collection: Potential for online collection of visitor data as alternative to airport surveys? Medium term. Potential for HTS to be collected online? Also medium term. IT and statistical design issues need to be considered. Plan must be costed

Any Questions?
