Warm up, 9/23 Describe in your own words what you think is meant by using different lenses to understand a situation? What, if anything, do you know about literary critical theories?

Learning Targets To distinguish between the different types of literary criticism. To apply a selected literary theory to one of O’Brien’s vignettes as a group. To apply a different literary theory to another of O’Brien’s vignettes independently.

Literary Criticism Overview Biographical Historical Reader Response Psychological Mythological or Archetypal Formalist Marxist Feminist

Group Work Break into small groups. Reread “Enemies.” Read over the definition of your assigned literary theory, and then, Answer the associated guiding questions in bullet/list format.

Independent Work Now, reread “Friends.” Complete the quick write using the information about the critical theory you’ve been assigned as a guide. This quick write is due at the end of class.

Homework 300-500 words of a college admissions essay/personal statement, typed and printed out, due on Tomorrow, 9/24 (2nd period only: Thursday, 9/25). FIND A MENTOR for your senior project (form must be completed by 10/9, along with parent form AND proposal). Reading 6 (“Stockings,” “Church,” “The Man I Killed,” and “Ambush”) and notes. Due Friday, 9/26.
