Mrs. King’s 2nd Grade Class Mill Creek 2018

A day In the Life of a Second Grader

7:25-7:40 Student arrival Students will follow our class Morning Procedures upon arrival. If students get here between 7:25-7:30, They will sit in the hall, outside of our classroom, and wait. Around 7:30, students will be greeted with a hug, high five, or a simple wave (whichever way they choose to be greeted). Students will then, come in and unpack quickly Lunch Boxes and Snacks go on the shelf outside our class Check KING binder for important papers/notes/money During this time, I will take attendance, check email, and we will start our day! Instructional time starts at 7:40 (students are considered late after 7:40).

(Phonics, Grammar, Reading Comprehension) 7:40--7:50 Morning Activity Each morning, the students will have a morning activity to complete. Examples: STEM Bin Review Work (Phonics, Grammar, Reading Comprehension) Math Activity

7:50-8:20 Phonics Lesson Fundations Spelling Patterns Letter sounds

8:20-8:50 P.E. P.E. teachers: Coach Klein, Coach Walls & Coach Fuller Students will be escorted to the gym during their P.E. time. Students will need to wear tennis shoes everyday to P.E. No dress shoes, sandals nor crocks are allowed during P.E.

8:50-9:00 Snack Every child will need to bring snack from home. I usually don’t provide snacks for students but, if you would like to send in extra snacks for students, who may occasionally forget, please let me know.

Breakdown of our Reading Block: Wonders is our reading program 9:00-11:15 LA Block Breakdown of our Reading Block: Writing lesson-9:05-9:45 Whole group reading instruction-9:45-10:25 Small group reading instruction-10:25-11:15 (Other students will be working in Lit. centers during small group instruction) Wonders is our reading program

11:15-11:45 Lunch Time! Students may purchase or bring lunches from home Prices and menus can be found on the the Madison City’s Website Take advantage of Paypams If you send in lunch money, please make sure it is in a sealed envelope or bag with your child’s name on it

11:45-12:05 Recess We will have recess everyday. Students are allowed to use toys/devices from home on Fridays for Fun FRIDAY!. During inclement weather, I do allow students to bring in devices and play things for inside recess as well

12:05-12:30 Independent Reading Time D.E.A.R.

Breakdown of our Math Block: Envision is our math program Whole Group math lesson-12:30-1:15 Small group math instruction-1:15-2:00 (Other students will be engaged in math activities that reinforce skills) Envision is our math program

2:00-2:30 Social Science Science: We incorporate STEM, STEM Scopes, and AMSTI kits during science. Social Studies: Will include special events or people (such as Historical leaders, our country, etc.) and team building activities

2:30-2:37 Pack-up/Dismissal This concludes our day! We will get our room tidy, pack up and dismiss to go home. All transportation changes will need to be emailed to me as early as possible, no later than 2:00. Transportation changes can no longer be made over the phone.

Newsletter/Homework Newsletters will be posted on our website weekly. Please check our website often for updates and announcements. Nightly reading 20 min is required Occasionally, I will assign a class projects for homework. Information about class projects will come home in advance.

Extra Curricula Activities Spanish-12:40 1:10 (Monday) Spanish teacher: Mrs. Powell Computer-8:35-9:25 (Tuesday & Thursday) Art/Music-12:40-11:15 (Friday) Music Teacher: Mrs. Stewart (1st semester Art Teacher: Mr. Night (2nd semester) Guidance Counseling 1:10-1:50 (Once a month on Wednesday) Counselor: Mrs. Claborn Library- will be used as needed Library Teacher: Mrs. Gray and Mrs. Bryant Child Find Classes-TBA Gifted teacher: Mrs. Harris

We get two field trips a year, one each semester Parents/chaperones must have a background check to attend all field trips (see Madison City website for more information)

Behavior I expect each student to follow the rules for our classroom We Have 5 rules for our classroom We use class Dojo for behavior as well as parent communication. Students earn points and Dojo bucks for making smart choices. For every 5 points on Dojo, students will receive 1 Dojo buck. Students may also earn bucks if they are caught showing good character or being a positive role model. Parents will be contacted through Dojo for any major behavior concerns. 15-75 Dojo bucks will get your child a visit to the Dojo store

Classroom test & Assessments Reading Test Weekly Reading test computer base (Tuesday) Unit test (end of each reading unit, there are 6 reading units) Spelling test (Friday) Grammar test (Friday) Note: your child may not have a spelling or Grammar test every week. Math Test Timed test (Weekly, usually Thursdays) Standard checks (after each math skill taught) Topic test (given at the end of each math topic) 9 weeks math assessments (given at the end of each 9 weeks)

System wide Test & Assessments DIBELS testing will be given 3 times this school year on Oral Fluency (End of the year benchmark is 111) STAR Reading and STAR Math: testing will be giving 3 times this school year AR: Each student is encourage to meet goals (Parents may keep up with their child’s progress through Home connect, this link is found on our website) OLSAT: Gifted Test is given second semester. Mrs. Harris is our gifted teacher and will also work with our students conducting child find classes

Report of Learning & Progress Reports Your child will be assessed on each 2nd grade math and reading standard. Progress reports will go home every 41/2 weeks (I will upload progress reports to Seesaw) Report of learning will go home every 9 weeks These will be sent in a folder labeled ”Grade of Reporting”

Absences All absences require a parent or Dr. note. Parent and Dr. notes must be provided within 3 days of absence. 10 parent notes are allowed within a school year (after 10, a Dr. note is needed or the child’s absence will be unexcused) Emailing me a note stating the reason your child was absent is TOTALLY acceptable. I will forward the notes to Allyson Willis, our office secretary, or you can cc her when you send parent excuses to me.

Room Moms? Our room moms for our class this year will be Mrs. Lynch. Please email me if it is NOT okay to give out your contact information. If I don’t receive an email, I will assume is okay. Some parents have already stated it was okay to share Contact information through the Google form sent out.
