What is Nitrogen? Where Can you find it?

Two types of nitrogen: Fixed: Unfixed: Usable by plants NOT usable by plants (found in the air and in living/dead organisms)

The Nitrogen Cycle Consists of two parts: 1-Nitrogen getting into the soil 2-Nitrogen changing into a form useable by plants

How does nitrogen get into the soil? Nitrogen gets into the soil from waste from living organisms (feces/urine) in the form of ammonia, which is toxic to most living organisms

Most Important Idea The process of changing nitrogen into a form useable by plants is called nitrogen fixation Bacteria are the only organisms that can do nitrogen fixation Denitrification converts nitrogen used by plants (nitrate) in the soil back to nitrogen gas in the atmosphere if there is too much in the soil

Carbon Carbon is a major component of all organic compounds, including: Carbohydrates, Lipids Proteins Nucleic acids

Carbon Is such a key ingredient of living tissue and ecosystems that life on Earth is often described as “Carbon based-life”

How the Carbon Cycle Works CO2 is continousley exchanged between the atmosphere and oceans through chemical and physical processes. Plants take in carbon dioxide during photosynthesis and use the carbon to build carbohydrates. Carbohydrates then pass through food webs to consumers.

How the Carbon Cycle Works Many animals combine carbon with calcium and oxygen that build skeletons of calcium carbonate. Organisms release carbon in the form of carbon dioxide gas production. When organisms die, decomposers break down the bodies, releasing carbon to the environment

How the Carbon Cycle Works Geologic forces can turn accumulated carbon into carbon-containing rocks or fossil fuels Carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere by volcanic activity or by human activities, such as burning of fossil fuels and the clearing of burning of forest.

Question that we face How much carbon moves through ach natural pathway? How do human activities disrupt those pathways, and consequences does that disruption have? How does burning fossil fuels affect atmospheric carbon dioxide? How do ecosystems respond to such change?
