Getting Started with Google Applications Lesson 2: Google Drive

Lesson 2: Google Drive Objectives: Explore Google Drive Perform basic tasks in Google Drive

Google Drive Google Drive is a cloud storage service where you can store, view and share files. You can access your files from anywhere, on any computer or mobile device, as long as you have an Internet connection and a web browser. Ask students if they use other cloud applications.

Arranging Windows Click and drag the edges of a window to change its size Reposition the window by clicking and dragging the top bar Viewing multiple windows at a time can make multitasking easier Students will need to understand how to resize and rearrange windows in the lessons. Depending on the skill levels of your students, you may want to take a moment to explain and reinforce this skill.

Logging in 1. Go to: accounts.google.com 2. Enter your email address. 3. 5. 4. Students will need a Google account. If you would prefer students use a different method to sign in to Google Drive, this would be a great opportunity to direct students. 3. Enter your password. 4. Clear the Stay signed in checkbox. 5. Click Sign in.

Creating Files You can see that you’re on My Drive by looking at the Navigation Pane on the left, or by looking at the menu bar at the top of the screen. All the files you create or upload are stored in My Drive. Click the red “New” button to access the drop-down menu. From here you can create folders, upload existing files, or create new Docs, Sheets, and Slides files.

Folders in Google Drive If you are planning to have your students organize their work in an alternate folder location, this is a great opportunity to explain that to your students. You can create folders to store and organize your work within Google Drive. You will create a folder called “BC21 Work” to store your work in.

View only files You will be using shared files in this curriculum. These shared files are view only, meaning that you do not have permission to make any edits directly in the file. Please make sure that students understand to make a copy of the view-only files provided from within the lesson. Clicking the request edit access link does not help the students, and often makes them confused. You will see a “view only” warning. Although the drop down menu suggests that you request edit access, DO NOT request access. Instead, make a copy of the files and save them to your work folder.
