Welcome to Year 5 ‘Meet the teachers’ evening Mrs Taneja Mrs Watkins, Mrs Baker, Mrs Peeler

Our ever-changing coasts (Coastal Erosion) Themes for Year 5 Our ever-changing coasts (Coastal Erosion) A Feast for a Pharaoh (Ancient Egypt) The Jungle Book

Themes for the year Ever Changing Coast- Coastal erosion Children visit Walton on the Naze to see for themselves how the coast is evolving and how we try to manage it. At the end of the term, they create presentations to teach Years 3 and 4 all about the coast.

Themes for the year Feast for a Pharaoh- Ancient Egypt We start the term with a visit from History off the Page, who recreate life in Ancient Egypt. The children use all their knowledge and skills from the theme to create their own ‘History off the Page’ experience for children from another school.

Themes for the year Children will read extracts from Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book and also watch clips from the movie Jungle Book. Consent forms for the same will be sent nearer the time. In art, we draw Rousseau’s Tiger in a Storm and look at other art works. In Geography, we make coastal models using modrock. In computing, we prepare power points for our coastal presentations to Years 3 and 4. In Science, we will be learning about the types of rocks and the rock cycle.

Reading record books. We expect children to read most nights and record it in the reading record. Children should take responsibility for this but encouragement from parents is greatly appreciated. These books should be returned to school each day as they will be checked regularly. There is a recommended reading list, appropriate to your child’s age in the reading records. Now, they also have a reading Bingo at the back of their books!

Homework English and Maths Homework is given out to the children on Thursday and it is due on the following Tuesday. Children have been given a HW folder and are encouraged to carry and bring back their HW in the same. Spellings will be stuck in the homework books every week. Please make sure that the spellings are completed and returned on Tuesday with all the other homework. If children find the homework difficult, they need to seek help from their teacher before the Tuesday that it is due in.

School uniform Runwell Community Primary School colours are royal blue, white and grey/black. We pride ourselves on our smart appearance and are grateful to parents and carers for ensuring uniform rules are followed. The uniform requirements are: Black or grey trousers/skirt. White polo shirt or shirt. A royal blue sweatshirt, fleece or cardigan (these can be purchased from Emblem in the town or from Tesco’s both with the school logo). Black shoes or black trainer shoes. Boots are only to be worn if it is really cold and they need to be flat. Sandals / flip flops are not suitable. No jewellery is to be worn except a watch and small stud earrings (which must be removed for P.E). Nail varnish should not be worn.

P.E. Kits – which must be in school all the time. Please provide your child with the following items. A T-shirt in your child’s merit colours. These can be bought from school for £2. Football shirts must not be worn please. Black or navy shorts. Trainers (for outside and inside use). Plimsolls or bare feet for gymnastics. It is recommended that warm clothes (sweatshirt/tracksuit trousers) are available for use in colder months, should the children go outside for PE. There are no requirements for these to be a particular colour or style, however they need to be plain and preferably dark in colour. Hair must be tied back and ear- rings cannot be worn, even with tape.

Now it’s over to you…. Have you any suggestions for us? (Please keep them polite!) Is there anything we don’t do now that you would like us to? Have you got any ideas about how we can involve all parents and carers more in your children’s education?
