Session 12 Writer’s Workshop Introductions w/ Relevance and Context (& conclusions, too!)

Getting background info matters! Connection A time I was introduced to something without relevance or context...I reacted badly because I didn’t know Getting background info matters!

Today I am going to teach you that... Essayists introduce their essays by explaining the context of the text and also by naming how the idea in the essay might be relevant to the reader.

Teaching My introduction should have three key parts: Provide relevance by naming what’s “universal” about my idea Provide context (BG Info) State my claim

Teaching What’s my claim? What topic am I talking about? Let’s review my outline

Teaching Relevance!! What part of my claim might people relate to? What idea or topic is universal? Hope? So let me start my introduction on my essay draft

Teaching Now what about context? How can I tell my readers about the story in a way that relates to the point of my essay? So I need to summarize the story through the lens of my claim (which is about hope) My summary (background info) should be the facts of the story, but also about HOPE! And after the summary, I need to add the claim

Active Engagement Be sure to follow the three steps: Work with your partner to see how one of your introductions can go--say it aloud, exactly how it might sound. Just one of you will go. Decide who. Follow Steps 1, 2, & 3 to think and write a little! Be sure to follow the three steps: A Hook that’s universal BG info that relates to your claim Claim

What step are we on?

Goal: Write your introduction and more Go, writers! Goal: Write your introduction and more Be sure your introduction has a universal idea and hook Be sure the introduction has BG info that highlights details that relate to your claim Be sure the last sentence of your intro paragraph states your claim Go on to your body paragraphs--entire essay draft is due Monday! At least 25 minutes of writing time

Extra help Refer to this student sample if it helps! Refer back to my sample introduction

Share Conclusions!!! What might a successful conclusion do?

Share Conclusions!!! What might a successful conclusion do? Restate the claim (finding another way to say the same thing) Leave readers with something interesting to think about Show how the claim of the essay connects to your own life or may connect to the iives of your readers. Suggest a further way of acting, or of thinking (implications, Show how your thinking about the claim changed as you reread

Homework: Finish all 4-6 paragraphs of your essay (2 -3 pages)! Be sure you have: Introduction Body paragraph 1 Body paragraph 2 Counter/alternative arguments addressed (either in separate paragraph or attached to body paragraphs. Conclusion
