Pumps, valves, and…pigs?

4.2 Technologies Based on Flow Rates and Moving Fluids Valves, Pumps, and Pigs!

This is a valve. How does it work? What functions does it serve? Define the term “valve”

Brainstorm common uses of valves

Valves Valve  device that controls or regulates the flow of fluids. Pump  a device that moves a fluid through or into something.

Pair and Share Describe how each pump works. How are they similar, how are they different?

The Bicycle Pump As the piston moves up, air fills the cylinder. As the piston moves down, the air in the cylinder is compressed. Pressure increases. When connected to an area of lower pressure, the air will move into that area.

The heart is a complex system of valves and a pump

A gas pig is not a farting farm animal

A pig is a computerized device placed in a pipeline and pushed through it by the moving gas. It cleans the pipe & its sensors monitor the pipe & record important information about its condition.
