What qualities or characteristics do you most appreciate about your family or family in general? What do you least like about family?

What parts of God’s nature can be reflected in…

Family language in the New Testament Brothers (135+ times) Sisters (125+ times)

Family language in the New Testament I Timothy 5:1-2—Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as brothers, 2 older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.

Spiritual sons/daughters in the faith Paul & Timothy: True son in the faith (1 Tim. 1:2; Phil 2:22—“like a son with his father,”) Paul and his churches: 2 Cor. 6:13—“As a fair exchange—I speak as to my children—open wide your hearts also.” I Cor. 4:14—Paul writes not to shame them but to warn them “as my dear children.” Gal. 4:19—Paul was again in the pains of childbirth with these “dear children” until Christ was formed in them. 1 Thess. 2:7, 8—”as a nursing mother cares for her children” I Thess. 2:11—”as a father deals with his own children”—. The Apostle John & his churches—10 times in 1st John—“Dear children….”

God in Relationship to Us Romans 8:16—”The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Hebrews 12:7—”Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father?

Family language in the Bible speaks both directions: From the Family of God to our families. From our families to the Family of God.

From the Family of God to our families. 2 Cor. 6:13—“As a fair exchange—I speak as to my children—open wide your hearts also.”

From the Family of God to our families. 1 Cor. 4:14—“I am writing this not to shame you but to warn you as my dear children.”

From the Family of God to our families. 1 Thess. 2:7, 8—“Just as a nursing mother cares for her children, 8 so we cared for you.”

From the Family of God to our families. 1 Thess. 2:11—“ For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children,12 encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God….”

From our families to the Family of God. I Timothy 5:1-2—“Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as brothers, 2 older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.”

1st Peter 1:22 “Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere [brotherly—philadelphian] love for each other, love [agapesate] one another deeply, from the heart.”

How is phileo love used in the N.T? Matthew 10:37—affection for family John 10:36—Jesus’ affection for Lazarus Revelation 3:19—Jesus’ love for his church Matthew 6:5—Pharisees’ love for public displays of piety.

What can “brotherly love” look and feel like among the people of God? Emotional attachments of the heart. Shared physical space (Heb. 13:1,2) Shared holy touch (Romans 16:16; 2 Cor. 16:20; 2 Cor. 13:12; 1 Thess. 5:26; 1 Pt. 5:14)

“Love one another” is the most often repeated “one another” command in the New Testament. Agapao = God’s undeserved love for the unlovely.

Hebrews 10:24, 25 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Romans 12:9-10—Love must be sincere Romans 12:9-10—Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.  10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.

Romans 12:9-10—Love must be sincere Romans 12:9-10—Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.  10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.

Wanting to join God’s family Wanting to join God’s family? It can happen by simple faith in Jesus Christ. Evil you need to let go of in someone else? Good you need to cling to in someone else? Any distracting or disruptive behavior God is asking you to change? Is there deep love in your family God is asking you to share with His church…or deep love in your church He wants you to share with your family?
