Math Course Sequencing for 2018-2019 School Year

Putting Together the Pieces Ensuring that we will build a solid foundation in mathematics is imperative to a student’s success as they move through middle school and ultimately into high school mathematics. As a school, our goal is to provide students with the appropriate courses so they can reach their potential and feel success. This process includes, but is not limited to, the use of course mastery, work ethic, and state assessments. The following slides are intended to inform you of the different avenues in which we can support your child.

6th grade accelerated math 5th grade to 6th grade 6th grade on level math 5th grade math 6th grade advanced math 6th grade advanced math ** For rising 6th grade students, during the first few weeks of the school year, realizing that there is review time, teachers work closely with administration to make sure that placement for students is appropriate. 6th grade accelerated math

6th grade accelerated math 6th grade to 7th grade ** For 6th to 7th grade recommendations, we continue to work with teachers concerning appropriate placement. In this process, there is an opportunity for students to move from on level to advanced math courses or from advanced to accelerated math course for their 7th grade year based on mastery of skills, work ethic, and state assessments. 6th grade on level math 7th grade on level math 6th grade advanced math 7th grade advanced math 6th grade accelerated math 7th grade accelerated math For 6th to 7th grade recommendations, we continue to work with teachers about appropriate placement. In this process, there is an opportunity for students to move from on level to advanced math courses or from advanced to accelerated math course for their 7th grade year based on mastery of skills, work ethic, and state assessments.

7th grade accelerated Math Accelerated Algebra I/ Geometry A 7th grade to 8th grade 7th grade on level Math 8th grade on level Math 7th grade advanced Math Algebra I (HS credit) 7th grade accelerated Math Accelerated Algebra I/ Geometry A (HS Credit) ** Due to the collaborative nature of teaming and content conversations as we transition students from elementary to middle and from 6th to 7th grade, we feel that a student’s 8th grade placement should be more streamlined.

Additional 8th Math Information Students who take Algebra I or Accelerated Algebra I/Geometry A will be required to take the Georgia Milestones End of Course (EOC) test at the end of the year. The EOC will count 20% of the student’s final course grade; A final average of 70 or higher will yield one unit of high school credit; The final course grade will not be part of the high school GPA Completion of either course will have no bearing on the HOPE Grant or Scholarship Students taking 8th grade math will take the End of Grade (EOG) at the end of the year. The EOG is not part of the final grade, and students do not earn a high school credit. Recommendations for students who successfully complete 8th Grade Math will be determined in the Spring of 2019 for the appropriate course in 9th grade. To preview the options available for math as a student progresses into high school, please refer to the 2018-2019 High School Course Digest which can be found at the following link--https://www.forsyth.k12.ga.us/Page/32404
