You need to know that… In the exposition of a story, you learn about: the main characters the setting (time & place) you might even start to see a little clue about the conflict!

Question 1 What kinds of information do you find out about in the EXPOSITION of the story you just read?

The life lesson or moral of the story The subject the story is about You need to know this… THEME: The life lesson or moral of the story TOPIC: The subject the story is about

Question 2 Explain the difference between the THEME of this story and the TOPIC of this story.

more about a character by: Think about This… A writer lets us know more about a character by: directly telling us about the character describing the character’s actions showing us what other characters think explaining the character’s thoughts

a Look at what the author wrote about the character in the story you just read. What does the author want us to think about this character?

So, basically… A character will react to each conflict in the rising action of the story. By the time the worst thing happens (turning point), the character has to make a major decision.

Question 4 How do the events here impact the way this character acts or the decisions that are made?

Clues about what might happen Do You Remember? Foreshadow Clues about what might happen later in the story. Flashback When a story goes back in time to tell about something that happened in the past.
