Chapter 16 Lesson 1. Did You Know All the cells in your body need to receive oxygen and nourishment. The cells also need to have carbon dioxide and waste.

The Circulatory System

Jobs of the Circulatory System: 1 Jobs of the Circulatory System: 1.To take oxygen, food & water to all of the cells in the human body. 2. To take waste products away from cells. 3. To help fight infection.

6 Parts of the Circulatory System: 1. Heart 2. Lungs 3 6 Parts of the Circulatory System: 1. Heart 2. Lungs 3. Arteries (Red) 4. Veins (Blue) 5. Capillaries 6. Blood

1. The Heart The heart is a pump that pushes blood throughout your entire body.

Heart Continued Your heart is the size of your fist.

Heart Continued Below is a close up picture of a heart valve. Heart sounds are made by heart valves as they open and close.

2. The Lungs The lungs give oxygen to your blood and take carbon dioxide away from your blood.

3. Arteries Arteries are tubes that carry blood AWAY from the heart.

Arteries Continued

4. Capillaries Capillaries are very thin tubes that connect arteries to veins. Capillaries are only one cell thick! Capillaries release food and oxygen from the blood into cells. Capillaries also take waste products like carbon dioxide from cells.

Artery Capillaries Vein

5. Veins Veins carry blood back to the heart and lungs. Veins carry blood with waste products such as carbon dioxide.

Veins Continued

6. Blood Blood is a liquid that carries nutrients, water, oxygen and waste products to and from every cell in your body. Blood travels through thousands of miles of blood vessels (arteries, veins, & capillaries).

Blood Continued Blood is made of four main parts: Red Blood Cells White Blood Cells Platelets Plasma

Blood Continued: Red Blood Cells Red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to all the cells of the body. Takes carbon dioxide and transports it back to the lungs There are 5,000,000 Red Blood Cells in ONE drop of blood!

Blood Continued: White Blood Cells White Blood Cells protect the body from germs These cells attack and destroy germs when they enter the body

Blood Continued: Platelets Platelets are blood cells that help stop bleeding

Blood Continued: Plasma Plasma is the liquid part of the blood About half of your blood is made of plasma The plasma carries the blood cells throughout the body Plasma is 90% water.
