Assessing Applications From Innovative Mixed Use Applicants Night Time Economy Workshop 20 November 2018

Welcome and Introductions 1 Welcome and Introductions Michael Murrell – Team Leader, Employment Policy and Systems Department of Planning and Environment

2 Workshop Purpose The purpose of this workshop is to help generate discussion amongst you. Its an opportunity to identify how you currently assess innovative mixed use developments and compare and learn from one another.

Innovative Mixed Use Developments Driven by global changes in: Customer behaviour and preferences, Technology, Urbanisation, and Competition from global businesses

Planning Response New land use definitions artisan food and drink industry means a building or place the principal purpose of which is the making or manufacture of boutique, artisan or craft food or drink products only. It must also include at least one of the following: (a) a retail area for the sale of the products, (b) a restaurant or cafe, (c) facilities for holding tastings, tours or workshops. Note. See clause 5.4 for controls in industrial or rural zones relating to the retail floor area of an artisan food and drink industry. Artisan food and drink industries are a type of light industry—see the definition of that term in this Dictionary. Explanation of why the change came about and what the new definition achieves

For Discussion How can we facilitate innovative mixed use developments through the existing planning system? Emphasise that a new definition should not be required for each new innovative mixed used development. The breadth of land use definitions in the standard instrument affords flexibility The NSW planning system affords the opportunity for merit based assessments.

3 Case Studies Present case study – example of what types of mixed use developments we are trying to facilitate Separate into groups Go through two examples at a time (3 times) Would the use be permissible under your LEP how could your council facilitate this type of development What steps would you take assist the applicant Someone from each group present the findings from their group – seek feedback from the room

Council Examples / Open Discussion 4 Council Examples / Open Discussion Give attendees the opportunity to present any challenges they are currently coming up against and seek feedback from the room on approaches to overcome these problems.
