MYTHS AND FACTS ABOUT MENTAL ILLNESS Mental illness will never affect me Mental illnesses are just an excuse for poor behaviour People don’t recover from mental illnesses MYTH MYTH MYTH Fact. All of us will be affected by mental illnesses. You may not experience a mental illness yourself, but it’s very likely someone close to you will. Fact: Some people who experience mental illness may act in ways that are unexpected or seem strange to others. It is the illness, not the person is behind these behaviours. Fact: people can and do recover from mental illnesses. There are many different types of treatments, services, and supports that can help. No one should expect to feel unwell forever. Even when people experience mental illnesses that last a long time, they can learn how to manage their symptoms so they can get back to their goals.

WHO IS AFFECTED BY MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES? 10-20% of Canadian youth are affected by a mental illness or disorder The total number 12-19 year olds in Canada at risk for developing depression is a staggering 3.2 million Suicide is among the leading causes of death in 15-24 year old Canadians, second only to accidents; 4,000 people die prematurely each year by suicide. In Canada, only 1 out of 5 children who need mental health services receives them.

TRIGGERS FOR MENTAL HEALTH CHALLENGES Does anyone know what a trigger is? Triggers are external events or circumstances that may produce very uncomfortable emotional or psychiatric symptoms, such as anxiety, panic, discouragement, despair, or negative self-talk. What may be a trigger for one person may not necessarily be a trigger for another.

MYTHS AND FACTS ABOUT ANXIETY Anxiety isn’t a “real” illness. Anxiety disorders are not very common. Some people are just worrywarts and there is nothing that can make a difference. People with anxiety could just snap out of it if they really wanted to. Anxiety is a normal reaction that many people experience. An anxiety disorder is diagnosed when experiences create significant distress and some degree of functional impairment in their daily living. MYTHS AND FACTS ABOUT DEPRESSION AND SUICIDE Depression only happens when something bad happens in your life, such as a breakup, the death of a loved one, or failing an exam. It's normal for teenagers to be moody; teens don't suffer from “real” depression. Talking about depression only makes it worse Talking about suicide may give someone the idea. Ignoring suicidal thoughts or actions can be dangerous Many people with a depressive illness never seek treatment. 4 out of 5 people who have died by suicide have made at least one previous attempt. MYTH MYTH MYTH MYTH Talking about suicide does not create or increase risk. The best way to identify the intention of suicide is to ask directly. Open talk and genuine concern is a source of release, and one of the key elements in preventing the immediate risk of suicide. For some, these behaviors are serious invitations to others to help them live. If help is not available, they may feel it will never come.
