A to keep a campfire Is it work?

A walk in the woods Once on a group camping trip a young middle school student went on a walk through the woods. His goal was to find tree limbs that would be good for a campfire.

Mission accomplished Walking on the trail a few hundred yards from the campsite the boy found a large limb fallen in the woods. The limb appeared to be perfect. It was large enough to provide plenty of fuel for the fire but small enough to be moved by a 13 year-old.

Get to work The boy drug the limb down the trail back to the campsite. Once there he began chopping the limb with his hatchet. Believing the work would only take a couple of minutes the boy crashed the hatchet vigorously against the limb.

Is this working? As the boy kept slamming his hatchet into the wood the hatchet would vibrate and bounce of the limb. The only result of the chopping were small gashes against the core of the fallen branch.

Wise advice After the boy had spent close to an hour chopping against the limb an adult camp leader came alongside the boy. The boy explained that the limb was putting up a tremendous fight but he would not give up. The boy said that the limb would eventually provide the perfect firewood. The leader shook his head and said “That is Live oak cork it won’t burn”.

Undeterred The boy shrugged off the words from the leader and scoffed “He doesn’t know what he is talking about. It’s wood and wood burns in a fire.”

Goal accomplished After well over an hour the boy and his hatchet were victorious. The wood was chopped into pieces for firewood. The boy walked his prized kindling to the fire and tossed it in. Watching the wood enter the blaze a strange thing happened. The wood did not burn it just charred up and turned to ash and coal.
