Earth’s Atmosphere Review

Atmosphere The gases surrounding the earth. What is it? The gases surrounding the earth. It contains gases, solids, and liquids.

Troposphere Weather Water cycle /clouds Living things: plants/animals What occurs or is found in the troposphere? Weather Water cycle /clouds Living things: plants/animals Mt. Everest! Troposphere

Is the layer with the greatest density Troposphere Is the layer with the greatest density

Mt. Everest Is still in the troposphere! Mt. Everest is 29,000 ft 5.5 miles 8.9 km The troposphere starts at Earth's surface and goes up to a height of: 7 to 20 km. 4 to 12 miles 23,000 to 65,000 feet above sea level.

Stratosphere What occurs or is found in the stratosphere? Jet planes Ozone layer Weather ballons Stratosphere

Temperature increases in the stratosphere because of the ozone layer.

So….How is the stratosphere different from the troposphere? Temperature increases, warms at a higher altitude

Gases in the atmosphere

Atmospheric Gases Which gas is the highest? Nitrogen Which gas is the lowest? Carbon dioxide

What is the Ozone Layer? Located in the stratosphere Shields (protects) harmful ultraviolet light from the sun, allowing life to thrive on earth. Chemical formula O3 What is the Ozone Layer?

What does the greenhouse gases do? Trap heat that radiates from the earth.

Atmospheric Relationships and Graphs Air Density

Atmospheric Relationships and Graphs Temperature

What happens to temperature as elevation increases in the troposphere? Temperature and the air is colder. Decreases.

Because…. Air near mountain tops is less dense.

The force or weight of the air pressing down What is Air Pressure?

Where is air pressure the greatest and least? Greatest at sea level Least in the mountains, as you go higher in altitude

Why does the troposphere have the highest amount of atmospheric pressure? It has the highest concentration of gas particles.

Why does the troposphere have the highest amount of atmospheric pressure? It has the highest concentration of gas particles.

20. The air pressure surrounding the balloon decreases.

Why does the balloon expand (get bigger)? Less pressure as you go up higher in altitude (elevation)..
