Road Map to Success: The Cold War World History II The end of World War II did not signal the end of conflict. In fact, a new kind of war was born: The Cold War. The Cold War was an ideological conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union. The two countries would oppose each other in places like Korea, Cuba, Vietnam, and the Middle East. The main objectives for the USA and USSR (Soviet Union) were to establish supremacy in the world, and preserve or spread their own system of government; Democracy for the United States and Communism for Russia. The Cold War was the most tense time in world history because the United States and the Soviet Union both had stockpiles of nuclear weapons. If these two superpowers ever fought each other directly using nuclear weapons, life on earth would have been drastically changed forever. You will master the following learning standards: WHII.30 Summarize the factors that contributed to the Cold War, including Soviet expansion in Eastern Europe and the differences between democracy and communism. WHII.31 Describe the policy of containment, including the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, and NATO, as America’s response to Soviet expansionist policies. WHII.32 Describe the development of the arms race and the key events of the Cold War era.
