Town Hall Meeting SIR Branch 8 Choosing Our Future September 10, 2018 12/31/2018

Our Wake-Up Call Big surprise Q1 2018 Maybe preventable reasons January- March loss of 21 active members Uncontrollable: 10 (48%) Maybe preventable: 11 (52%) Maybe preventable reasons Personal, other commitments: 7 Lost interest: 2 Lack of diversity: 1 Branch too big: 1 What’s happening here? 12/31/2018

Deeper Look At 2015-2017 Is this a one-time event or is this a trend? Do we have a dissatisfied membership? Are there any age-related resignation factors? 12/31/2018

Branch 8 Membership Changes 2015 – 2017 Analysis 12/31/2018

Loss of Early-Tenured Members - 89% within 24 Months 12/31/2018

Age Profile of Resigning Members (Branch Median Age 77) 12/31/2018

Wake-Up Call Top Findings We are losing too many members Losing them fast and Mostly younger members Must understand why and act on acquired knowledge Reach member consensus on changes 12/31/2018

BEC Approach to Understanding FACT: We are not a single, homogeneous group We have three distinct generations Often with different perspectives and needs The critical questions What’s going on? Why are we losing younger members? Is this a one-time event or a deeper member satisfaction problem? Think carefully through Who we are, understand our generational needs Getting clarity on how we add/detract value to members From both existing members and those we lost What changes are needed to attract and keep new members 12/31/2018

BEC Conclusions & Response Develop potential actions & change ideas Early BEC approval of obvious ones Involve the membership in potential changes BEC action plan accomplishments Surveyed members in June Held focus groups in July Consolidated findings & actions in August Present results at September Town Hall branch meeting (less presentation, more discussion) 12/31/2018

Choosing Our Future 12/31/2018

Wake-Up Call Top Findings We are losing too many members Losing them fast and Mostly younger members Must understand why and act on acquired knowledge Reach member consensus on changes 12/31/2018

Next Steps Balance recruiting new members with meeting the needs of current members Continue with implemented actions Lead with activities Improve new member integration process Do deeper retroactive exit interviews Eliminate “I’ve Done My Part” from the lunch agenda Increase emphasis on Lifelong Learning Begin introduction of Community Involvement participation Diversity: get serious about looking more like our community 12/31/2018

The Struggle: Generational Issues How do we create important new recruiting initiatives without ignoring older members who may not agree or wish to participate? Recommendation – With discussion, listening and consensus, we can do both. Could we change the business portion of the luncheon (i.e. religious and patriotic themes) without alienating some members? Recommendation – Yes,we could, but we need more information from member resignations and guests who don’t join; revisit the issue in 2019. 12/31/2018
