Essential Question: How do I get on the same page with many people about what my students are doing on a daily & unit level? 2 How do standards help my students? How do standards help me? 3 How do I apply the standards to my plans? 4 What does this mean for my developing vision? CMs define what the CCSS are and how they should be used from grade to grade to achieve the 10 targets in ELA. CMs identify their grade-level-band’s standards and explain the role of their standards, as well as strengths and limitations. CMs align past institute objectives to the CCSS. CMs check the alignment between the standards and the rubrics we use.

What are Standards? Why should I care about them? DO tell us what Ss should know & be able to do at the end of each grade. DO tell us how each grade relates to other grades all the way up to the end-of-12th grade “anchor standards”. NOT which texts to teach. NOT how each minute of a class period should run. The K-12 Common Core Standards on the define what students should understand and be able to do by the end of each grade. They correspond to the College and Career Readiness (CCR) anchor standards below by number.  Let’s look at the anchor standards for ELA. NOT how to build skills and also build a class culture.

The 10 Reading Anchor Standards Key Ideas and Details: 1: Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text. 2: Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas. 3: Analyze how and why individuals, events, or ideas develop and interact over the course of a text. Craft and Structure: 4: Interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative, and figurative meanings, and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone. 5: Analyze the structure of texts, including how specific sentences, paragraphs, and larger portions of the text (e.g., a section, chapter, scene, or stanza) relate to each other and the whole. 6: Assess how point of view or purpose shapes the content and style of a text. Integration of Knowledge and Ideas: 7: Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse media and formats, including visually and quantitatively, as well as in words. 8: Delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, including the validity of the reasoning as well as the relevance and sufficiency of the evidence. 9: Analyze how two or more texts address similar themes or topics in order to build knowledge or to compare the approaches the authors take. Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity: 10: Read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently.

Reading the Standards Grade Level or Grade Band Strand: RL, RI, W, L, SL These standards Grade-level specific standard So, we would read this standard about the structure of an informational text like this! RI.9-10.3.

Common Core State Standards: Read & Analyze Read the ELA Standards for your grade and talk about the following questions: http://www.corestandards.org/assets/CCSSI_ELA%20Standards.pdf PAGE 34-58 What is the difference between an anchor standard & a grade-level standard? Which standards make perfect sense & what’s confusing to you after reading them? Why? How are the standards and the PARCC related? How are the standards and the rubrics related?

Practice Aligning Standards to Objectives MODEL: RL.8.1.- Cite textual evidence RL.8.3- Analyze how dialogue & action reveal aspect of a character Kind of RL.8.4- Determine meaning of words W.8.1-Write arguments with claims & evidence You do it! Day 1: SWBAT describe how the two main characters – Roger and Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones – are indirectly developed in “Thank You, M’am” through their descriptions, actions, and dialogue. Day 2: SWBAT discuss how the author uses Roger as a dynamic character, and his relationship with Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, to reveal the text’s theme. The way kids learn in ELA is by practicing these standards COUNTLESS times over the course of the year. Students will do a number of different standards-skills each day. Share rational in white box about why we seek to align to these standards. KEY POINTS: It’s our responsibility to communicate to our school leaders which skills/ standards our students are working on each day. It’s our responsibility to provide many opportunities throughout the year for students to practice these skills with texts we choose and writing & speaking assignments we design. These standards are assessed with the PARCC, so planning with them will prepare your students for that assessment! Model– When thinking about what my students will be doing with this first objective… -- I know that “Thank You, M’am” is literature, so I’m going to use RL standards. --
