Alexander Builds an Empire Alexander began to conquer Persia in 334 B.C. with the Battle of Granicus. Alexander defeated the Persian army at Issus and freed the Greek cities in Asia Minor. Then he captured Syria and Egypt. Alexandria was a center of business; it became one of the most important cities in the ancient world. Conquest through modern day: Pakistan, India, and Iran In 323 BC, Alexander but he became ill and died
