CABS TTT Workshop 2018 Introduction This presentation has been prepared with a view to recommending that each STSO conduct revision clinics through all levels so that scoring standards and updates to scoring can be maintained at a National level. Similarly, some rules are not being interpreted correctly and revision is necessary. It is suggested that each STSO take responsibility for implementing and recording such revision clinics, topics for which can be nominated. Some of the more common topics will be covered here.

This has come about after accessing various different scorebooks, and from LL, JL & SL Nationals, in which it has become apparent that some very basic scoring practices are falling away and rules not being correctly interpreted. Whilst endeavouring not to open discussion on varying scoring techniques within each State, there are some issues which need to be revised.

CABS TTT Workshop 2018 Introduction Cont. We need to promote uniform methodology and techniques of scoring practices. It is suggested that revision clinics for currently accredited scorers need to be implemented; this applies not only to inexperienced scorers, but also to the more senior scorers who may need reminders, refreshers. It may also be a method for ensuring that accredited scorers do not overlook some updates of the basic techniques required, simply because they already have achieved their desired level.

CABS TTT Workshop 2018 Introduction Cont. We need to monitor and record, via Log Books, any such revision carried out, either as an attendee or as a facilitator. This should particularly apply to accredited scorers who have allowed their membership to lapse for a period of up to 12 months longer.

It is planned that recommended topics for revision are available for update, perhaps every six months or so, on the website, email or issued through each STSO. Please feel free to nominate topics, rules or scenarios for this purpose. This presentation has been prepared in two sections, one to discuss scoring techniques and their application and the other for rules and their interpretations.

CABS TTT Workshop 2018 Scoring Technique Topics LINKING PLAYS Please make sure that any plays which involve more than one base, are linked by one of the accepted methods – this will alleviate any potential problems for those third parties who may wish to read the scorebook or need to perhaps enter the details for statistics purposes. Any plays which occur on the one pitch should be linked.

Linked plays can be indicated: by a continuous arc from the initial play to any advancing base on the same associated play by broken arcs from the initial play to any advancing base on the same associated play Of course, this also applies for advancing more than one base on any play, whether it be a hit, WP, PB, etc.

As has previously been recommended, we encourage the use of the batter number who is at bat at the time of the advance on any of the above. This will assist in recording to whom these should apply, in the event of cumulative stats being overlooked. It also gives the coach an immediate indication of the game situation at the time, and whose responsibility these advances are. Pick-offs and Caught Stealing Make sure that the fielder/s involved have their participation recorded for this out, with their position number and the indication of PO or CS.

CABS TTT Workshop 2018 Scoring Technique Topics SACS It was determined many years ago that the large “S” be written through the squares in blue. Remind attendees that this applies to SAC bunts and SAC flies. These outs are to be separately recorded in the stats columns. Of course, if the SAC play is errored which would otherwise have resulted in an out, reminder to still record the SAC. BUNTS Record all bunts, whether or not they are out, to show it is definite that it was the intention of the batter to bunt, not merely a mis-hit. Prefix the play with BU or whichever symbol you may use to indicate a bunt. Some apply the arrowhead and have it pointed to the direction in which the bunt was made. This is purely intended as an aid to the coach.

CABS TTT Workshop 2018 Scoring Technique Topics DP/TP Scorers need to be reminded that the outs are to be connected for any double or triple plays. Some scorers use the diamond mark to indicate the outs, others may connect with a vertical line with markers – all methods of indication are to be in orange. Be sure to differentiate between GDPs and DPs for stats and again as an aid to the coach.

CABS TTT Workshop 2018 Scoring Technique Topics SUBSTITUTIONS Batter / Runner Make sure that the batter change is marked vertically at the place in the innings where the new batter enters, rather than when he is due to bat. The batter may enter the game in the defensive half of the innings and should be marked in at that time, indicating the innings at which he started in the CH column and the batter number if not at the start of an inning. Eg Pos 8-5 if at the 5th batter. When batter substitutions are made in the offensive half, mark the incoming batter as a Pinch Hitter (PH) in the Pos Column and in the CH column, which inning he appeared in. Should he take the field, then make the notation of his fielding position and inning he appeared in. Note: Mark this vertical entry in either green or in pen with players surname.

CABS TTT Workshop 2018 Scoring Technique Topics SUBSTITUTIONS Cont. Also teach that defensive changes are made only in defensive and offensive changes in offense (PH and PR). Teach not to cross out names when substituting players. Pitcher Make sure the change is marked at the point in which the pitcher enters the game and faces his first batter; also ensure that this is recorded in the pitcher’s stats and, if the team has a designated hitter, ensure that the relief pitcher is recorded below the batting line up. Enter the innings at which this takes place. NOTE: Mark this horizontal entry in blue**

CABS TTT Workshop 2018 Scoring Technique Topics ERRORS There seems to be a continuing lack of application of the “decisive” and “indecisive” allocations to errors. Please remind scorers that “decisive” is upper case in red, whether it be wild throw, receiving error, etc. and is applied when the batter/runner would definitely have been out had the error not been made. “Indecisive” errors are scored in lower case, also in red, and apply only when they are an extra base opportunity for the batter/runner.

CABS TTT Workshop 2018 Scoring Technique Topics ERRORS Cont. These differences are important, particularly when determining earned/unearned runs. Also, make sure that the muffed foul fly is applied when appropriate. This can make a difference to the earned/unearned run tally.

CABS TTT Workshop 2018 Rules Revision This can be endless and varied, but there are some topics which continue to be problem areas. OFFICIAL SCORER Some preliminary responsibilities need to be discussed during any revision, and remind scorers of: Rule (old book) 10.01 (b) (1) Rule (new) 9.01 (b) (1) Code of Conduct needs also to be included in the revision.

CABS TTT Workshop 2018 Rules Revision SACRIFICE BUNT OR FLY As mentioned earlier, ensure that bunted Sacrifices are recorded, when it is obvious that this is the batter’s intention, regardless of whether or not he has reached base without the aid of an error, provided a preceding runner has been advanced. Rule: (Old) 10.08 (a) and 10.08 (d) Sac Bunts Rule: (new) 9.08 (a) and 9.08 (d) Sac Flys RBI This is often a point of contention. Please encourage study of the relevant rules and their applications. CABS TTT Workshop 2018 Rules Revision DOUBLE PLAY/GDP Rule: (old) 10.11 Rule: (new) 9.11 GDP (no rule ref) This is charged against a batter when the situation on the field meets the following criteria: Fewer than two out One or more runners forced to advance Ground ball to the infield that results in two or three putouts The symbol for grounded into double play is “GDP” written inside the box of the batter-runner.

CABS TTT Workshop 2018 Conclusion It is the intention that each STSO co-ordinate such revision clinics, and they can be across the levels, not necessarily for each level, as it is merely topics that need to be revised, not particular or advanced plays. This can be done on an informal annual basis.
