Take out two pieces of blank paper. Warm-up Take out two pieces of blank paper. How many students are represented on this line graph? How many students own more than 2 jackets? What is the range of number of jackets in this data set?

Take out two pieces of blank paper. Warm-up Take out two pieces of blank paper. How many students are represented on this line graph? Each x represents 1 student How many students own more than 2 jackets? 3 What is the range of number of jackets in this data set? 3 Looking at numbers of jackets that have x’s above them. 4 - 1 = 3 15

Line Plots How many students read fewer than 4 books last month? What does each x represent? What is the mode number of books in this data set. AKA which number of books occurs most frequently according to the line plot?

Line Plots How many students read fewer than 4 books last month? Counting how many read less than 4 (not including 4). Answer is 31. What does each x represent? Each x represents one student. What is the mode number of books in this data set. AKA which number of books occurs most frequently according to the line plot? Since two has the most students listed above it, 2 is the mode number of books read.

Frequency Tables Frequency Table: a table that shows the number of pieces of data that fall within a given interval. Steps to create a frequency table: Make a table with 3 columns. Choose a scale that contains all of the numbers (must contain the least # to greatest #) Choose an interval that will help describe the data. Use tally marks to record each data value. Complete the “frequency” column. ON THE TEST, YOU WILL READ AND INTERPRET FREQUENCY CHARTS.. YOU WON’T NEED TO CREATE ANY FROM SCRATCH. Interval definition: the distance between successive values on a scale. Scale: includes the greatest and least values. What does the word frequency mean to you?

Creating a Frequency Table Create a frequency table using the given data. D = dog, C = cat, F = fish, H = hamster Pets F D D D C H F D C D D F H C H D C D C C F In this case, the intervals are the categories.

In this case, the intervals are the categories.

Histograms Histogram: a type of bar graph used to display numerical data that have been organized into equal intervals. There cannot be gaps between the bars in a histogram. Steps to construct a histogram: Make a frequency table to organize the data. Draw and label the axes. Include a title. Show the intervals on the horizontal axis and label the vertical axis to show the frequencies. For each interval, draw a bar whose height is given by the frequencies.

Constructing a Histogram The following are lengths of caterpillars found in Mrs. Carol’s garden. 3.1 cm, 3.8 cm, 4.3 cm, 5.7 cm, 6.1 cm, 6.2 cm, and 6.9 cm. Create a frequency table to represent the data. Create a histogram that represents the data. Intervals: 3-3.9, 4-4.9, 5-5.9, 6-6.9 Which interval has the largest number of caterpillars?

Interpreting Histograms 26

Interpreting Histograms There are 26 apple trees in all. Look at the axes. The vertical axis has the Number of Trees. Count the number of trees in each bar and add them up. 4 + 2 + 1 + 5 + 8 + 6 = 26 26
