Homework: A+ answer: How did the Great Awakening and Enlightenment influence colonial society?

Religion and Ideas in the Colonies: Great Awakening and the Enlightenment MI: The Great Awakening and the Enlightenment led to ideas of political equality. (everyone gets treated the same by the government). Movements (changes in ideas/thoughts) in Europe started to spread in the American colonies and gave people new ideas about government. 1730s= religious leaders wanted people to be more religious. Had revivals=religious and emotional gatherings. The Great Awakening = a time when people became more interested in religion. Changed ideas about government and relationships. Jonathan Edwards: important leader of the Great Awakening. Had dramatic sermons that told people to repent and go back to God. Great Awakening = united people from different backgrounds (rich, poor, men, women, different cultures and countries). Different colonies started talking to one another. Great Awakening spread the idea of equality and democracy.

Enlightenment 1600s = people started learning more about nature. Started the Scientific Revolution (more focus on science and inventions). Enlightenment = 1700s, spread idea that reason and logic can improve society. Thinkers during the Enlightenment thought that there needs be agreement between the people and the government. John Locke = people had rights to equality and liberty.

The Great Awakening and Enlightenment Main Ideas and Supporting Details MI: The Great Awakening and Enlightenment led to ideas of political equality. (everyone is the same/equal in the eyes of the government). The Great Awakening and Enlightenment started in Europe. When more people were in the colonies religious leaders wanted to spread religion. They held emotional gatherings to attract people. Great Awakening – during the 1730s and 1740s people in the colonies became more religious. This affected their relationships with one another and their ideas about government. Jonathan Edwards: was one of the most important leaders in the Great Awakening. From Massachusetts. He had emotional and dramatic sermons. He convinced people to repent (turning away from sin, go back to God). Social Impact: different types of people were brought together: different classes (poor and rich), different races, women and men, all participated in this religious movement. One of the rare times that the different colonies exchanged ideas: united. Ideas of spiritual equality made people want more rights.
