AP World Review Units 1 & 2

Overview Advice Be aware of the periodization Don’t get bogged down in details Details can be used as essay evidence Assume you need to answer “Why?” for everything Use the Course Description as your primary study tool

Specifics for Unit 1 Three key concepts Big Geography and the Peopling of the Earth The Neolithic Revolution & Early Agricultural Societies The Development and Interactions of Early Agricultural, Pastoral, and Urban Societies Represents 5% of total exam (Maximum 7 MC Questions and no independent essay)

If you were going to study nothing else for Unit 1… Geography (Where is everything?) Required examples Differences between Pastoralists and Agrarian Peoples

Things to be careful about “Hebrew Monotheism” is not Judaism The “Vedic Religion” is not Hinduism They are both precursors Ask yourself why these would be listed separately

Unit 2 Specifics Three key concepts The Development and Codification of Religious and Cultural Traditions The Development of States and Empires Emergence of Transregional Networks of Communication and Exchange Represents 15% of total exam (Could represent one standalone essay OR 21 MC Questions OR fewer MC Questions & part of a multiperiod essay

Religion & Culture Axial Age Culture Stuff Know the main belief systems Remember most people are still animists/shamanists Culture Stuff You don’t really need to know specifics EXCEPT connection between Greco-Roman and Buddhism Sounds like the basis of a good evidence or interpretation MC question

What are “Evidence” & “Interpretation” MC Questions? Evidence Questions Reading Comprehension No knowledge is needed outside of the document Same question could be asked on an English standardized test Interpretation Questions Focus on Historiography Why do historians assert particular theories? What evidence can be used to support this historian’s theory?

States and Empires Know the states/empires that are required and their locations How did they run? Political Systems Social Systems Cultural Systems Labor Systems Why did they collapse? Probably best to be an expert on two in case there is a comparison essay question

Transregional Trade and Communication Know the required trade routes Climate Location Trade Goods Ethnicity Diffusion Cultural Diffusion Technological Diffusion Biological Diffusion (Diseases and Crops)
