Warm Up Why do we need to learn about the past? How do we figure out what happened in the past?

How Historians Study the Past Essential Question: What questions do historians ask to help them understand the past?

Objective Students will be able to: Analyze the reasons why people study history Describe the tools historians use to study the past Explain how our understanding of history is always subject to change

Key Vocabulary Primary Resources- something written or created by a person who witnessed a historical event Secondary Resources- an account of a historical event written by someone who did not witness the event Oral History- an unwritten account of an event

Why Study History? When historians examine past events, they try to find patterns. They look for causes and effects that explain how and why events happened. They also try to understand why some ideas and traditions last and why other dies out. Just as important, historians attempt to see the past through the eyes of the people who lived it. By doing so, historians gain greater insight into human nature and answer important historical questions

How do Historians Study the Past? Using Tools Ask Questions Historian’s Job Examine Evidence

Ask Questions Historians ask questions like: How have groups or societies interacted, and what have been the results? How have leaders governed societies? How have belief systems developed and changed? How have societies dealt with differences among their people? How have societies tried to protect people’s security? How are societies similar and different?

Using Tools What tools does a carpenter use? Much like a carpenter, a historian uses tools to study the past such as primary and secondary resources. Primary Resources- something written or created by a person who witnessed a historical event Secondary Resources- an account of a historical event written by someone who did not witness the event

Examining Evidence Detectives use fingerprints and other evidence to solve crimes. Historian use evidence from primary and secondary sources to analyze history. They sift through all the sources to draw conclusions about the events.
