What EXACTLY is a counterclaim? A counterclaim paragraph implies “Theres is another side/point of the arguement, but….” You are proving the weakness in the COUNTER(opposite)CLAIM! Remember, your paper is arguing to get the reader to recognize your point of view. A good, well-rounded paper addresses what the other side might say and explains why that point of view is wrong.

Rebuttal The rebuttal part of the Counterclaim is where you show the opposite claim is wrong and your claim is right. Point out the flaws to the counterarguments while reinforcing your original claim.

Counterclaim Sentence Starters… On the other hand, the opposition might say… However, While some researchers say… Nevertheless… It’s easy to think…,but when you look at the facts… It may be true… However,… A common argument against this position is…, but… Others may say that…. But it can be argued that... Critics argue that…. However,….

Sample Counterclaim Claim- Although they are traditionally seen as a distraction, students should be able to bring cell phones to school because digital literacy can be used for educational purposes. COUNTERCLAIM On the other hand, many people argue that students should not be able to bring cell phones to school because they could use them to communicate during a test. Over the past few years, several students have been caught using cell phones on class test and even state test. Although there are risks associated with allowing students to have cell phones in schools, with proper regulations like collecting them on test days the benefits outweigh the risks. According to the article, “Using Mobile Phones to Improve Educational Outcomes” by John-Harmen Valk, “social interaction is central to effective learning, as indicated by theories of new learning, mobile phones should also impact educational outcomes by facilitating communication.” Therefore, students should be allowed to use cell phones for educational purposes. RED COUNTERCLAIM shows what the opposition may say about a CLAIM. Show students that GREEN statement DISAGREES with the RED COUNTERCLAIM. The BLUE-GREEN infor supports the GREEN argument against the counterclaim.

Group Counterclaims I am going to give each group a claim. Your goal over the next 15 minutes is to take that claim and write a counterclaim paragraph. You are working with your group, but everyone needs to write down the paragraph. I am going to give you a graphic organizer to help you. You will have to use your phone to find research.

Groups Students should not be required to wear school uniforms. High school students should be required to complete a certain amount of community service hours before graduating. All young people under the age of 18 should have a curfew. The driver’s license age should be raised to 18.

Individual Counterclaim Video games are harmful to society.
