Presentation transcript:

Ways we can avoid the summer slide! Summer Extravaganza Ways we can avoid the summer slide!

Summer Slide is what happens when the skills students learn during the school year are lost or forgotten over the summer. When kids don’t practice their reading or writing skills during the summer months, they can fall behind by the time school starts again. Reading over the summer will help polish up those reading and writing skills in time for August 27th! (Children’s Literacy Initiative) What is summer slide?

How does the summer slide impact my child? When children don’t read or participate in anything educational over the summer, over time they can fall TWO YEARS behind by the time they get to fifth grade. It’s always important to support your child’s learning at home, and over the summer--- this is critical! How does the summer slide impact my child?

Preventing Summer Learning Loss Home-based summer learning has been proven effective. Three hours engaged in learning each week can prevent summer learning loss.

How to set up some summer goals. Set some summer reading and writing goals together. Make age appropriate goals. Make sure your goals are realistic. Set up a reward system.

How to make summer learning fun. Sneak books into all the fun activities you do! Keep books in the car. Play games or puzzles together that will require your child to read words. Sing songs or nursery rhymes with younger ones. Listen to Audio books. Make it part of your routine. Model good reading habits.

Go to the library! Public libraries often have great summer programs for kids, and these are usually inexpensive or free. Check out the flyer in the bag. While you’re there, let your child pick out some new books – It will be much more exciting to crack open a book if they have the opportunity to choose.
