 Matter is classified by its chemical and physical properties.
Properties of the Elements. What are elements? Elements are… Pure substances made of one type of atom.
Physical Properties Does it Matter?. Magnetism Matter that contains iron or nickel will be attracted to a magnet. Not all metals are attracted to a magnet.
Vocabulary. The stuff that everything is made of.
Pg. 22. Physical Properties  Characteristics observed that don’t change identity  Physical properties help identify substances.
Matter What is it?. Matter Matter is anything that takes up space!!! Matter is everything around you. Matter is anything made of atoms and molecules.
Physical Properties A property than can be observed, measured, or changed without changing the substance itself.

Appearances of an object including: mass, magnetism, physical state, relative density, solubility, and the ability to insulate or conduct heat or electricity.
Physical vs. Chemical. Physical Property: A Feature of a material that can be observed or measured without changing the composition of the material –Ex:
Physical Properties of MATTER and Changes MATTER can undergo!!
MATTER DEFINTION: ANYTHING THAT HAS MASS TAKES UP SPACE.
Physical and Chemical Properties. Properties Every piece of matter we come in contact with has unique characteristics that make that matter the way it.
A Physical Property is a property that can be observed without changing the make up of the substance. You just look at it - or measure it. Examples are:
Properties of Matter. Make a T chart in your spiral Classify each of the following as physical or chemical Gas productionTarnishing SouringExpanding CoolingHeating.

Extensive  depend on the amount of matter present (such as mass, volume, and the amount of energy of a substance) OR Intensive  do not depend on the.

Physical Properties and Changes

Physical Properties You do not have to change the composition (what it is made of) of a substance to observe physical properties

Physical Properties Examples: Color Odor Taste

Physical Properties Ex. Cont.: Density – measure of how tightly packed matter is. (see pg. 295 – density balls)‏ Magnetism – ability to be attracted/connected to a magnet.

Physical Properties Ex. Cont.: Conduct – ability to increase the flow of electricity, sound, light, heat, and cold. Insulate – ability to prevent the flow of electricity, sound, light, heat, and cold.

Physical Properties Ex. Cont.: Buoyancy – the upward push on an object by the liquid (or gas) it is placed in. Absorption – the process of taking in (usually liquids)‏

Physical Properties Ex. Cont.: Boiling point – temp. at which a liquid has enough heat/energy to change to a gas. 100 degrees Celsius

Physical Properties Ex. Cont.: Melting point – temp. when a solid becomes a liquid. Freezing point – temp. when a liquid becomes a solid. 0 degrees Celsius

Physical Changes

Physical Change A change in matter that only changes the appearance of the substance Substance that has the same ingredients but different forms

Examples of Physical Change Water freezing Tearing paper

Examples of Physical Change Candle Melting
