What are the masses of the subatomic particles? Atoms and atomic mass What are the masses of the subatomic particles?

Review Questions: What is the charge on a proton? What is the charge on a neutron? What is the charge on an electron?

Review Questions: What two particles are found in the nucleus? What is the region outside of the nucleus called?

Plickers This assessment will be used as a quiz grade The same questions were used in your practice quiz yesterday

Atomic Mass Protons and neutrons have similar masses Each proton and neutron has a mass of 1 amu Amu – atomic mass unit

Why not electrons? The mass of an electron is 1/1876 of a proton Yes, electrons have mass, but we do not count them in the atomic mass

Mass is… Mass is the amount of matter in an object Because electrons are so small, most of the matter in an atom, its mass, is in the nucleus = p + n

Look back in your notes… What takes up most of the volume of an atom? Empty space
