The Water Cycle

The glass of water you’re about to drink Deserves a second thought, I think. For Avogadro, oceans and those you follow Are all involved in every swallow. The molecules of water in a single glass In number, at least five times, outclass The glasses of water in stream and sea, Or wherever else that water can be. The water in you is between and betwixt, And having traversed is thoroughly mixed, So someone quenching a future thirst Could easily drink what you drank first! The water you are about to taste No doubt represents a bit of waste From prehistoric beast and bird— A notion you may find absurd. The fountain spraying in the park Could well spout bits of Joan of Arc, Or Adam, Eve, and all their kin; You’d be surprised where your drink has been! Just think! The water you cannot retain Will some day hence return as rain, Or be held as the purest dew. Though long ago it passed through you!

Water Water is a renewable resource, that is, it can be used again and again. It is a basic natural resource to maintain life

Up, Up in the Air = Evaporation Warmth from the sun causes water from lakes, streams, ice, and soils to turn into water vapor in the air. Almost all of the precipitated water (80 percent) goes right back into the air because of evaporation. The rest runs off the land or soaks into the ground to become ground water

Plant Sweat = Transpiration Transpiration happens when plants give off water vapour through tiny pores in their leaves. This is the plant’s way of getting rid of waste, just like people and animals sweat when they’re hot! This water vapor evaporates into the air and is stored in the atmosphere until it becomes clouds or precipitation.

Water Vapour and Condensation Water vapour is water in a gas form that is held in the air until it changes back to water. Water vapour in the air gets cold and changes back into liquid, forming clouds. Water vapour in the air gets cold and changes back into liquid, forming clouds. This is called condensation.

Watered Down = Precipitation Precipitation is made up of any type of water that falls to the earth like snow, hail, mist, or rain. Most of it evaporates or transpires through plants and never reaches lakes, streams, or ground water. The rest of this precipitation, runs off the land into lakes, streamsor rivers (also called "surface water"), or, it soaks right into the ground.

Soaking it Up = Infiltration Infiltration happens when water soaks into the soil from the ground level. It moves underground and moves between the soil and rocks. Some of the water will be soaked up by roots to help plants grow. Some of the water keeps moving down into the soil to a level that is filled with water, called ground water. The very top of this layer filled with ground water is called the water table.
