Fourth Judicial District of MN, Serving Hennepin County eReminders Outcomes Fourth Judicial District of MN, Serving Hennepin County

eReminders in Hennepin Court Even though our reminders are increasing, only about 45% of them are actually getting to the defendants successfully (this analysis is specifically in Criminal). We really need to encourage our clerks (administrative and judicial) to continue to ask for updated contact information.

Trend in BW for Failure to Appear - Criminal

BW-FTA by Success/Non-Success of eReminders Monthly Results 30.4% decrease in FTA with a successful reminder

Which type of Reminder is most Successful?

When Texts are NOT successful (33% of time), Why Not?

When Emails were NOT successful (56% of time), Why Not?

Cost of Bench Warrants To the Jail: To the Defendant/Community: Bench Warrant arrests are in jail for an average of 2 days Cost of a day in jail $133.65/day Cost to the County for all BW arrests in 2017: Over $5.6 million dollars To the Defendant/Community: Missing 2 days of work at minimum wage ($7.87/hr * 16 hours) Salary lost: $2.6 million dollars, plus other collateral costs Depending on situation of the arrest, a car could be impounded Defendant could lose his/her job, rental apartment, day care, etc. To the Court: Of missed hearings: $1.4 million dollars This does not include our justice partner costs

In Summary: Reminding people of their court dates increases the appearance rate We were able to reduce the FTA rate by 30% when defendants are successfully reminded of their court appearance. Our success so far is with only partial contact information: Only 63% of the texts reminders have successfully reached defendants Only 44% of the emails reminders have successfully reached defendants The most common reason for not reaching the defendants is the absence of their contact information. Reducing the Bench Warrants for Failure to Appear can save the county, the public, the court and the defendants negative consequences and costly resources.
