GOLDFIELDS MOTOR CYCLE CLUB A BRIEF HISTORY GOLDFIELDS MOTOR CYCLE CLUB

The Beginning The first moment in history for the Goldfields Motor Cycle Club was it’s first race meeting. This occurred at Monte Christo quarry in 1914. This lead to the founding of what we now know as the GMCC.

In the period from 1931 to 1965 , scrambles as they were know then were conducted annually at the Cavalier Hill course on the slime dumps east of Kalgoorlie. The course of those races consisted of a tough 3.1 mile circuit and was run over 25 laps in either direction.

The 1950’s Road Racing In the early 1950’s, the GMCC held an annual Boulder circuit race, which was also the richest round the town road race consisting of a 3.7 mile circuit. People of the time got to see great solo riders Peter Nickels, George Scott, Stan Foster and Jack Polkinghorn battle it out to be the first past the finish line and take victory.

The Founders With vision foundation members Ken Marshall, Frank Sclanders, Jack Johnston and Ted Percy purchased land opposite the old Kalgoorlie/Boulder airport. The ground came to be known as the Ted Percy Memorial Sports Ground. Ted Percy was a club member and proprietor of the Federal Hotel, which was for a time headquarters and meeting place for all motorcycle enthusiasts and GMCC members. In 1974 a tin shed was erected and this become the club’s first clubhouse and home of their own.

The Golden Wheel Classic In 1985 we saw the creation of a Motocross event which has gone on from Humble beginning’s to become an event attracting some great riders both local and interstate. They come here not only for the prize money but also to take home a unique hand crafted trophy.

1988 Bi-Centennial Event This year saw the return of road racing to a shorten but still challenging event. The circuit started in Burt street, along the Boulder block road, down Hainault road to the Golden Eagle corner then back to Burt street. Competitors consisted of 101 solos and 20 side cars.

Kambalda The year of 1990 saw the GMCC move road racing to a circuit in Kambalda. The event was named the Nickeltown September Spectacular, with over 100 solo and sidecar riders.

New Airport In 1992 with the City of Kalgoorlie/Boulder planning a new airport saw an exchange of our Ted Percy land for our current home. This created the Ken Marshall Sports Ground in honour of another founding member. This new home brought to the GMCC a new track, a modern brick clubhouse and huge pit area and complex. As of today we now have a strong membership base and have a quality facility to call home to still evolving club.
