Parts of a Narrative Think of it like telling a story, these stories are often anecdotal, experiential, and personal which helps to allow “CREATIVITY” Should still have a purpose like all essays When written as a story should include all parts of a story “I” is okay to use in these essays Never forget that for these narrative essays when writing it you should have it based around a person, a place, a memory, an experience, or an object

Telling a Story Your essay should tell a story and describe a person, place or object so vividly that the reader gains insight or developes the feeling as if they could reach out and grasp what is being described In order to successfully write an effective essay you should write about a topic that you are passionate about ** Get right to the point/action ** Make sure your story has a point ** Use all 5 of your senses NSA

How to write an Anecdote Anecdote: a short and amusing or interesting story about a real incident or person. 5 W’s : Who, What, When, Where, and Why - Who was involved/ affected? What is the topic/purpose? When did it take place? Where did it take place? Why is this topic/purpose important? Be specific. • Sensory Details • Expand what you wrote and put them together

Experiential Description Passionate story Something you have experienced or observed Ex: Monologue from the end of the Seinfeld episode, “The Marine Biologist “The sea was angry that day my friends, like an old man trying to send back soup at the deli. I got about 50 feet out and suddenly the great beast appeared before me. I tell he was ten stories high if he was a foot. As if sensing my presence, he let out a great bellow. I said, “Easy, big fella!”‘. Excellent job Aaron!

HOW TO DO… WHAT TO NOT DO... THE DO’s THE DON'TS Pick a topic and write your thesis statement Make an outline of the topic Draft it Look for and add enough details to paint a picture for the reader Conclusion should tie up loose ends in the story and restate thesis Revise it Have someone else read it over THE DON'TS The story has no chronological order No beginning, middle, or end Has no descriptive adjectives, or figurative language Has grammatical errors Does not draw in the attention of the reader Make text larger. Consider placing Dos on one slide and Donts on another
