Fig 1 Keratin retraction in mouse keratinocyte cultures after 24 hours of treatment with normal human IgG (nhIgG) or pemphigus patients IgG (PVIgG). Immunofluorescence analysis shows retracted keratin intermediate filaments (red) from plasma membranes. At that time point, the plasma membranes of neighboring cells were still adjacent, as exemplified by the merge with the staining for adherens junction components (E-cadherin; green), while intercellular adhesive strength was already reduced.2,4 The “ruffled membranes” likely indicate alterations in signaling cascades relating to small GTPases.
