Pointillism Landscape Painting

What is a landscape? A landscape is the visible features of land Physical: Mountains, hills, trees Water bodies Land cover Human made structures Weather conditions Artists began depicting landscapes in earnest when industrialization changed landscapes with pollution and sprawl (1800’s-Industrial Revolution)

How were landscapes painted “traditionally”?

Realistically depict features from studies outside. Paint in a studio Wivenhoe Park, John Constable 1816

How did Impressionism change landscapes?

Claude Monet, Poppies Blooming….

Impressionism -1870 Group of artists in France wanted to start a new, radical style of art Paint tubes allowed them to paint outside Railways made travel around countryside easy Invention of cameras made realism unnecessary

Monet, Landscape at Giverny

Impressionism-1870 Works considered “cutting edge” Shocking to public Criticized as bad Artists By 1900’s widely accepted style Inspired many new ideas in Art

What was George Seurat’s vision for Impressionism Seurat close up

What is pointillism? HINT: How am I made?

Horse by George Seurat

The term "Pointillism" was first used with the work of Georges Seurat. Pointillism is a form of painting in which tiny dots of primary-colors are used to generate secondary colors.. The term "Pointillism" was first used with the work of Georges Seurat.         Sunday Afternoon in the Park by George Seurat

How eye sees color

Fun Facts: This painting is 7 feet high by 10 feet wide. There are 3,456,000 dots that were painted to make up the painting Each dot is only about 1/16th of an inch It was featured in Ferris Buehler’s Day Off It was the subject of a musical

Painting the color wheel You are going to create a color wheel to help you with the Pointillism Project. Primary- red, blue, yellow Secondary- purple, green, and orange Intermediate- yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, red-violet, red-orange, yellow-orange When making the intermediate colors you mix the secondary color first then add more of the primary color. Example- red-orange: mix red and yellow to get orange then add more red

FIRST: Choose a landscape from the reference file NOW : Practice drawing it in your sketchbook Where is the background? Middleground? Foreground? Draw the physical elements SATISFIED? Draw it on the Canvas Paper

The next step is to use pointillism (dots) to create blending of colors in your painting. Look at your painting, where you used green, you can fill that area in using a tint and shade of green, and yellow -green dots that are close together. This technique can be used for all your colors. Use a tint, shade, and intermediate colors for the dots. ALL DOTS SHOULD BE CLOSE TOGETHER AND SMALL.
