Nature inspiring Technology. LESSON 2/5 Nature inspiring Technology. Within this lesson you will cover: Develop strategies to produce creative design ideas using nature & natural forms as inspiration. Understand how companies take inspiration using morphing as a strategy. Complete a series of design ideas; developing confidence & creativity.

Strategies for INNOVATIVE DESIGNING Objective - Learner will gain knowledge and understanding of different design strategies which an be applied using nature as inspiration. Strategies for INNOVATIVE DESIGNING Natural Forms Morphing Designers often seek inspiration from their surroundings to influence their products. Two methods they use are: Morphing Using natural forms During todays lesson you will: Develop understanding of these methods. See why designers use these methods. Complete a series of design activities.

Morphing shapes for inspiration Objective - Learner will gain knowledge and understanding of different design strategies which an be applied using nature as inspiration. INNOVATIVE DESIGNING - Morphing Natural Forms Morphing Morphing definition: To change smoothly from one image to another by small gradual steps using many methods including computer animation. Morphing shapes for inspiration

Morphing is when two things merge together to become one. Objective - Learner will gain knowledge and understanding of different design strategies which an be applied using nature as inspiration. INNOVATIVE DESIGNING - Morphing Morphing shapes for inspiration Design strategies are ways to help you come up with ideas. Have you ever been asked to design or draw something and your mind goes blank? This is a way of helping some up with ideas. One of these ways is morphing. Morphing is when two things merge together to become one. These are some examples. We can use this to help us design a new product. Designers often develop old products with a new styling. One way of doing this is by morphing an animal and a household product together.

Morphing shapes for inspiration Objective - Learner will gain knowledge and understanding of different design strategies which an be applied using nature as inspiration. INNOVATIVE DESIGNING - Morphing Morphing shapes for inspiration Toilet Brush morphed with a plant pot. Wine bottle opener morphed with a woman's figure. Butter dish morphed with a boat. Soap dispenser morphed with a duck. Egg cup holder morphed with a cartoon person wearing a baseball cap. Alessi produces everyday objects which combine mass production with creativity. This encouraged new thinking and ideas for stylish and designer products. Most products designed and manufactured by Alessi use morphing within its creation.

Morph two items together to create a new idea! Objective - Learner will gain knowledge and understanding of different design strategies which an be applied using nature as inspiration. INNOVATIVE DESIGNING - Morphing Morphing is a design strategy where you gradually change the shape step by step. OR Morph two items together to create a new idea! The above sketches show examples of how morphing could be used as a possible design idea method for generating ideas.

INNOVATIVE DESIGNING - Morphing Objective - Learner will gain knowledge and understanding of different design strategies which an be applied using nature as inspiration. INNOVATIVE DESIGNING - Morphing Designers often develop old products with a new styling. One method of achieving this is by morphing a household product with an object such as an animal together. Duck & Kettle Shark & bottle opener Cat & toasty maker Giraffe & Kettle Pick two of the kitchen products & using the mood board produce a range of morphed design ideas.

Render your designs (adding colour & shade) Objective - Learner will gain knowledge and understanding of different design strategies which an be applied using nature as inspiration. INNOVATIVE DESIGNING - Design Task Re-design the kitchen objects from the printouts (combining an animal to a product). Aim to have at least two different ideas for each object, relating to different target markets (e.g. Teenagers, adults, single sex etc.) Render your designs (adding colour & shade) Annotate & label explaining how your object relates to your chosen target market, links to the image board, materials, textures & how it would work.

Mood board to print.

Worksheet to print. – Students to cut out the images and sketch the morphed design in their books.

Self assessment Plenary Looking at the learning objectives, which level do you think you have achieved today? How could you have improved upon your designs and reached a higher level? Plenary Pass You are able to draw direct inspiration from a natural object in order to redesign a new product Good Pass You are able to draw inspiration from a natural object in order to redesign a new object that appeals to your chosen target market High Pass You are able to draw inspiration from a natural object in order to redesign a new object in at least two different ways that clearly appeals to different target markets.

Objective - Learner will gain knowledge and understanding of different design strategies which an be applied using nature as inspiration. PLENARY Self assessment Swap your book with your partner for them to mark and review against the provided criteria.
