LENSES A lens is defined as - A ground or molded piece of glass, plastic, or other transparent material with opposite surfaces either or both of which.
Lenses A lens is a transparent material (with at least one curved side) that causes light refracts in a predictable and useful way. Each ray is refracted.

Presentation transcript:

Light

Light travels in a straight line until it hits a new material Light travels in a straight line until it hits a new material. When it hits the material, some of the light reflects and some is transmitted. If the light bends as it is transmitted, we called this “refraction.”

Transmitted light Refracted light Reflected light

The shape of the material determines how the light rays will be refracted (bent).

Convergent lens

Convergent lens

Convergent lens

What do convergent lenses do? Convergent lenses bring the light together to a point.

The point where all the light rays intersect is called the focus point.

Where’s the focus point?

Divergent lens

Divergent lens

Divergent lens

What do divergent lenses do? Divergent lenses spread out the light rays.

Here is a diagram of the human eye

Convergent or divergent? What kind of lens do you think the human eye has?

Why does the image turn upside down?
