Lord of the Flies Exam Technique Objectives: Know what kind of questions to expect in the exam Understand what is expected from your answers Be able to use different planning techniques

What kind of questions? Always an essay-style answer Questions will focus on a character, theme or another aspect of the novel. You may be asked to closely analyse an extract from the novel. OR you will be given a statement about the novel, which you must analyse and discuss.

What should be written? To reach the highest grades, you must make sure you mention the following: LANGUAGE: word choices, techniques and their effect CONTEXT: how does historical / social background connect to the novel? MEANINGS: themes / ideas. Explain what the novel is about and why it was written. Use PEE throughout! You will be given a copy of the novel to use to find quotations.

Planning an Answer: How? Read question carefully and highlight key words – decide what it is asking you to do. Organise your ideas – 5 minutes (2 ways): MIND MAP – Place essay question in the middle and use a different line for each key point. Have 4 or 5 key points, with at least 1 x PEE for each. Number them to decide which order you will write them in. BULLET POINTS – do the same, but in list format Tick off points as you use them. At the end of the exam, check that you have covered all ideas thoroughly. If out of time, make a brief bullet point list of everything you would have written.

Group Work – Planning Practise You will be working in groups of 4. Each group will have an exam question. Using your notes and copies of the novel, make a plan for answering this exam question. Follow the guidelines just given. You have 15 minutes, then must share ideas with other groups. One question from today will be used as a TIMED ESSAY question next lesson.
