PARCC-style Literary Analysis Compare/contrast two fictional selections, focusing on a particular literary element The prompt will tell you what literary element you are focusing on: characterization, point of view, theme, plot, etc.

Planning/organizing A RESPONSE “Unpack the prompt:” turn it into a question to make it easier to “answer” Annotate the prompt: highlight arguments and evidence List key similarities and differences between two texts

Essay Structure Intro Short (1-2 sentences) Re-state the prompt State your thesis Body 1: Contrast Evidence from text 1 Body 2: Contrast Evidence from text 2 Body 3: Compare Two pieces of evidence (one from text 1, one from text 2) Conclusion Short Re-state intro in new words Ultimately, what conclusion can you draw about the literary element in question?

Example Prompt BEFORE YOU READ: Today you will analyze passages from two novels. As you read these texts, you will gather information and answer questions about the characters and points of view so you can write an analytical essay…. AFTER YOU READ: In Confetti Girl and Tortilla Sun, the narrators have points of view different from those of their parents. Write an essay analyzing how these differences in points of view create tension in both stories. Remember to use details from both texts to support your ideas. How can we “unpack” this prompt (A.K.A. turn it into a question)?

As we read/annotate, what should we look for? “unpacked” prompt In these two passages, how do the differences in point of view between the narrators and their parents cause tension? Write an essay using details from both texts to support your explanations. As we read/annotate, what should we look for?

By the end of class tomorrow… Read and annotate both texts Answer the multiple choice questions Complete both “planning” and “outline” sides of the worksheet *Only those who have completed all 3 editing columns and this PARCC-style assignment will be permitted to type tomorrow in class
