Relationships of Percent, Decimals, and Fractions Fraction Decimal

Fractions On your graph paper please make a square that is 10 X 10. What percent is the 10 X 10 square? How many squares are there all together? Now shade in 1/2 of the square

Relationships Continued Your graph paper should now look like this. What fraction does this represent? How many of the 100 squares have you shaded in?

Relationships continued The rectangle represents one whole. We have ½ shaded. We can also say that it is 50/100. How would we express this as part of a 100 or in decimal form?

Relationships Continued More than 1 Less than 1 Anything to the right of the decimal is less than one. When we are dealing with fractions decimals and percentages we are talking about amounts that are less than the referent whole.

Relationships Continued We know that in looking at our graph paper and our drawing of a 10 X 10 square that the figure is made up of 100 smaller squares. If we are only shading 50 of those then based on the fact that we know that the entire figure represent 1 then 50 squares would be ½ or .50 of the total figure.

Relationships Continued Now we know that ½ is equal to .50, but what about the percentage? What percent does ½ represent?

Relationships Continued If we know that the 1 whole shape equals 100% than ½ or .50 of 100 would be 50%. Looking at your graph paper who many small squares are shaded?
