Hello 38m My name is Mr. Dunne

3 weeks Thursday and Friday Media Studies

WHY?

Because: I have written for newspapers, both local and national. I have written reviews for gaming magazines and helped design internet critic websites. I set up a school newspaper when I was your age ($$$$)

Newspaper conventions

Tabloids

Broadsheets and Compacts

Heading – Media Studies 1 Plan Week one – Introduce concepts Week two – You create things Week three – we put it together to create a paper.

Heading – Media Studies 1 You have four minutes to answer the following two questions. That’s about two minutes each. Where else can people find the news apart from newspapers? Make a list which begins with the words: “People can find the news.... (from, at, by..) How many newspapers can you name? Make a list.

WHY STUDY NEWSPAPERS? Papers do not need to be recharged and they cannot be broken. 42% of people say that newspapers are more important than T.V. or radio. Writers, reporters, editors, photographers, advertisers, paperboys and many other people make a living from this trade. Do you want to fire them? They are over 300 years old and that itself deserves respect. (Worldometer – Newspapers)

KEY TERMS COMING UP! WRITE THEM DOWN!!!

BROADSHEETS Broadsheets – very serious newspapers with lots of information.

TABLOIDS Tabloids – entertaining news meant for gossip and enjoyment. (often sickening)

Photograph: Important for how audience will react. Masthead: Title and logo of newspaper Strapline: Extra, smaller introductory headline Pug: promotions, special offers or price of newspapers. Photograph: Important for how audience will react. Headline: The large font above an article.

There are spaces on these sheets There are spaces on these sheets. Fill them in with the concepts you just wrote down.

Homework For Monday, could everyone bring in the front of a newspaper, the more odd or unusual the better. For tomorrow, answer this question. Why do you think tabloids use more pictures than broadsheets? Two reasons.
