Religious Freedom: It’s Freedom to Think for Yourself Why is the Virginia bill dealing with religion called the most important document in American history? It separates Church and State and was the foundation for the 1st Amendment. What did George Washington think about religious freedom? George Washington was originally against it, but after discussing it with Thomas Jefferson he became a big supporter of religious freedom. What did Jefferson have written on his tombstone? Author of the Declaration of Independence Author of the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom Father of the University of Virginia Use the handout called “Religious Liberties of Public School Students” to answer the following questions. Can students read their personal bibles at school? 2. Can teachers conduct bible study with other teachers during school hours? 3. Can a student who is giving a Promotion speech have religious content in their speech? 4. Can teachers organize after-school bible studies for students to voluntarily attend? 5. A group of 6 students meet at lunch in the library to read the bible. Is that allowed? 6. A student sits down with friends in the commons. Before eating they say a prayer. Is this allowed? 7.
