Communication Anxiety FEARS & FACTS ABOUT Communication Anxiety

ACTIVITY Rank each common fear below on a scale of 1-10 1 = no fear at all, 10 = extreme fear Spiders (arachnophobia) Flying (aerophobia) Darkness (achluphobia) Small or tight spaces (claustrophobia) Germs (mysophobia) Public speaking (glossophobia) Thunder/lightnight (astraphobia) Snakes (ophidiophobia) Death ( thanatophobia) Heights (acrophobia)

FACTS ABOUT COMMUNICATION ANXIETY Public speaking remains the #1 phobia What this means? Even speakers have this fear. Social phobias, regardless of which one, begin in childhood. What this means? Speech anxiety will only get worse until you break it down and learn the skills. While the fear of public speaking is common, it will lead to a lack of success if you do nothing about it. What this means? Get past it. Don’t let it hold you back from a degree, a career, relationships, sharing thoughts and ideas, etc.

CONT…. 3 out of 4 people suffer from speech anxiety. That’s 75% of all people. That includes extroverts (or social people). 15-20% have high anxiety. What this means? It’s common, so don’t feel like you’re alone! Women and men are effected equally with public speaking anxiety. What this means? Most demographic features don’t matter. Anyone can be effected and anyone can overcome speech anxiety!
