Notches, Cliffs and Wave-cut Platform COASTAL FEATURES Notches, Cliffs and Wave-cut Platform

NOTCHES & CLIFFS A notch is cut in the rock at the level where wave attack is concentrated. When the notch is cut too far, the area above this notch collapses forming a cliff. A cliff is defined as a steep rock face. Where marine erosion is powerful, the coastline is eroded to form a cliff. Erosion is concentrated at sea level.

CLIFFS & WAVE-CUT PLATFORMS The process of erosion continues and the cliff retreats further and further back. As the cliff retreats, a flat area which is exposed at low tide is left at its base.  This feature is known as a wave-cut platform. https://www.curriculumbits.com/prodimages/details/geography/cliffs-and-wave-cut-platforms.html

GROUP ACTIVITY Sort these statements into two sequences (one for abrasion, one for hydraulic action) to show how cliff erosion takes place. How does the waves erode cliffs? Draw a series of 2-3 diagrams, using every statement to label them, to show how cliff erosion takes place.

Individual Assessment Explain the formation of cliff . 4mks Draw an annotated diagram to explain the formation of a wave cute platform . 4mks
