LESSON DESIGN

What are the stages of a lesson? Create a Flow Map identifying the stages of a lesson. What is the first thing you do in a lesson? Next?...

POETRY LESSON PLAN Key Ideas and Details: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.1 Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.2 Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text; summarize the text.

Choose one of the maps to brainstorm what you know about poetry.

The poem we will read and analyze today refers to these 4 kinds of people. Draw these 4 Circle Maps on one sheet of paper and quickly brainstorm everything thing you know about each one.

Read this poem. When I Read I’m a runner, a racer, I’ve got a lot of speed. I can spring from here to there with time to spare, But when I read then I’m a diver! I plunge right in and until the story’s over I don’t come up for air. Then too I’m an explorer, a tracker and a rover and I always find something I didn’t know was there. Lillian Morrison Read this poem.

Analyzing Each Part of the Poem With your small group, construct a Brace Map to break the poem into meaningful stanzas (parts). Add a Frame of Reference. Then add a main idea statements for the entire poem and for each part. Finally, add a concluding statement that tells why your group thinks the author wrote this poem. Whole Poem

What do you know about this poet? “Lillian Morrison’s contributions to the world of children’s literature and librarianship were many,” said Ellen Ruffin, curator of the de Grummond Collection at University of Southern Mississippi, where Morrison’s papers are housed. “She spent more than forty years as a librarian and wrote children’s poetry books, an unusual combination of both a writer and a practitioner—proof positive of her commitment to children and books.”

THINKING CREATIVELY ABOUT THE POEM Pair with another person not in your group. Draw a Task Card Work together to construct your assigned Map. You have 5 minutes. Work with another pair to share your thinking. Post your Maps.

Work with your small group to construct this summary map. CLOSURE Work with your small group to construct this summary map.

TAKING INFORMATION OFF THE MAP POSSIBLE PRODUCTS FOR TAKING INFORMATION OFF THE MAP Using the structure of this poem, write your own poem about When I Read or When I Shop or When I …. Working with one other person, do a dramatic presentation of “When I Read.” Create a series of illustrations to go with this poem. Design a poster for your classroom about ways to enjoy reading. Create a video for teachers with suggestions for helping their students to enjoy reading. Find another poem about reading and design Thinking Maps to help compare that poem to “When I Read.” Your choice with teacher approval.
