Reflected Light

Activity - How Light is Reflected in a Plane Mirror VOCABULARY Plane mirror Normal Incident ray Reflected ray Angle of incidence Angle of reflection

Characteristics of Images FOUR CHARACTERISTICS OF IMAGES INCLUDE… Location An image may be the same distance, closer to, or farther from the mirror than the object. 2) Orientation An image may be upright or inverted (upside-down)

3) Size An image may be the same size as, larger than or smaller than the object. 4) Type An image may be real or virtual.

IMAGES IN A PLANE MIRROR LOCATION The same distance from the mirror as the object ORIENTATION Is upright SIZE Same size as object TYPE Is a virtual image

Light rays follow the laws of reflection when they reflect from a plane mirror To find out where the image appears, extend the reflected rays backwards until they meet (shown by dotted lines) Try to draw the image of the candle on your sheet!

A plane mirror produces an image almost identical to the object BUT the image will be reversed. What happens when you see a reflection of mountains in a lake? Reversal is in vertical direction

Concave & Convex Mirrors Watch the following video http://www.youtube.com /watch?v=GBHrpd26JIw

What are 2 ways that the images in the Cloud Gate are different than if the images were in a plane mirror? VOCAB: Concave Convex Converge Diverge

TIME FOR A LAB... Concave vs. Convex Mirrors In partners, get a light ray box & follow the instructions carefully! The textbook will help you to complete parts of this lab.
