Presentation transcript:

Investigation: Electric Motor (CPO 16.1) Purpose: To learn how an electric motor works Name: _________________________ Bend the two paper clips so they look like the photo. Fasten the paper clips to the battery with rubber bands, so they are touching the positive and negative terminals. Stick the battery to the table with a small piece of clay, so it doesn’t roll around. Put a magnet on top of the battery. Teacher Initials: ______________ Set the coil into the paper clip so it is free to spin. Adjust the height of the paper clips until the coil rotates just above the magnet. The motor should spin! Try adding a second magnet. Does the motor go faster, slower, or about the same? ___________

ANALYIS QUESTIONS When electricity is running through the coil of the wire, what type of force is created around the coil? ___________________________________________________________________________ What is the purpose of the permanent magnet in the motor? _____________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ What interactions cause the coil of wire to spin? Provide evidence from the lab in your answer. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ What are three things that might make the motor spin faster? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
