Why do cells divide? 1. Reproduction In unicelluar organisms it is a form of asexual reproduction (one parent organism) produces 2 identical offspring The original cell is called the parent cell and the new cells are called daughter cells

2. Growth In multicellular organisms produces new cells for growth EX/ Humans start as one cell that rapidly divides.

3. Replacement , replaces old or worn out cells EX/ skin cells are constantly dividing and being replaced.

4. Repair For repairing damage examples break bones - Starfish loses a limb ** not all damage can be repaired through cell division

What are the phases of the cell cycle? Interphase – the cell grows and copies the DNA Mitosis – when the cell nucleus divide Cytokinesis – the cytoplasm divides

What happens to the genetic material (DNA) during cell division? DNA - a molecule that contains information from parents that determines traits instructions for growth, development, and cell activities

What happens in Interphase part of the cell cycle? 1. Cell growth and duplication of organelles DNA in the chromatin (loose strands of DNA in the nucleus) is copied and coils and becomes a chromosome – visible DNA
