The Napoleonic Empire

The Coronation of Napoleon

Napoleon’s Home Policy The Consulate was a personal regime, based on Napoleon’s enormous political capability. Reflected by the Constitution of Year VII in which there was no separation of powers or declaration of rights To face the Second Coalition, Napoleon went to Italy, defeating them at Marengo (1800) and naming himself lifelong Consul. He started a series of liberal reforms Modernized the Law (created a Civil Code); Economic- created the Bank of France and Code of Commerce Promoted public education system Established a new nobility based on civil and military merit

Napoleon’s Foreign policy i) GB forms the Third Coalition with Austria and Russia. Napoleon transformed the Republic into an Empire (1804) and launched a new campaign, with the support of France. Despite the defeat the the French and Spanish at the Battle of Trafalgar (1805), French victory at Austerlitz ended the Holy Roman Empire. Later victories agaist the Fourth Coalition (GB, Prussia & Russia) lead to the Peace of Tilsit (1807), which marked the zenith of Napoleon’s power.

Napoleon’s Foreign Policy ii) From here on, Napoleon’s foreign policy took 2 directions: alliance with Russia and the isolation of Great Britain through the Continental Blockade*. Portugal didn’t accept the blockade and Napoleon decided to invade it. On the way he invaded Spain (1808), starting the Peninsular War which would last until 1813 and consume the resources of the Empire. Russia broke its alliance with France and started to trade with GB. Napoleon invaded Russia in 1812 but was defeated. 1813 the Sixth Coalition (GB, Prussia, Russia & Austria) defeat Napoleon at the Battle of Leipzig. Napoleon is defeated in Spain. 6 April 1814 The allies arrive in Paris and Napoleon abdicates and is exiled to the Island of Elba. The Hundred Days Government – Napoleon returned but was defeated at the Battle of Waterloo (1815) He was deported to the island of Santa Elena, where he died. *Napoleon ordered European countries to stop trading with the British.
