No Warmup Get out your Wars of Resistance worksheet from yesterday. Ready 1 minute after the bell

Logistics Tomorrow we will take the district post assessment It is a multiple-choice test It will act as quiz 8.2 in your gradebook. Out of 15 points in the gradebook (20 questions total) Still no extra credit It is on imperialism and lines up pretty well to our 8.1 and 8.2 content (no china) Expect the test to take all period. Bring quiet things to do when you are finished.

Logistics I will collect the following tomorrow after the quiz: Century of Humiliation Imperialism in Africa (textbook half-sheet) Congo Free State Wars of Resistance Decolonization

Wars of Resistance You will now fill out the back of your worksheet. You need info from 3 other wars. You have 10 minutes to be finished.

Decolonization Decolonization: the process of gaining independence by former imperialized countries. Took place in Africa (and globally) in the 60-70s

Decolonization We are going to watch a video on decolonization. The front of your worksheet is video notes. Is in chronological order

Legacies of Imperialism There are 3 problems that imperialism left in Africa. As we go through them, answer the questions on your worksheet.

Problem 1: Bad Borders Europe drew Africa’s borders without knowing what they were doing. When Europe drew the borders of Africa, they grouped up hundreds of nations who had no previous history of working together. Other nations were split between multiple countries.

Problem 1: Bad Borders This has made it very difficult for African countries to build national unity. Hundreds of civil wars and separation movements have been created by this problem. Some of these conflicts have been settled as wars and peaceful movements have slowly unified nations.

Problem 2: Foreign Ownership Most African resources (mines, etc) are still owned by foreign companies. This means that even though Africa produces enormous amounts of money, most of that money does not stay in Africa. Europe, America, and China still benefit from Africa’s resources more than Africa does.

Problem 2: Foreign Ownership African countries have recently been attempting to recapture this wealth by charging enormous taxes on resource wealth leaving the country. This is called “Resource Nationalism”

Problem 3: Political Instability The suddenness and indifference with which Europe decolonized Africa left a power vacuum. That power vacuum was filled by warlords, militias, religious fanatics, and rebel armies. Many African countries have struggled to find lasting peace or political stability.

Problem 3: Political Instability As national unity and the power central governments increase, wars against the government have continued to decline. Most countries in North, South, and West Africa have settled these problems. Many any countries around the Congo or Horn of Africa continue to struggle.
